Saddle Club Program-
“Learn to communicate with your horse clearly and effectively”
This program has stemmed out of the Everything Farm Program for those participants wanting to form a partnership with one of our school horses, continue to gain confidence on the ground around horses and through riding, as well as improve communication skills.
Overall, it is a program for improving humans’ relationships with horses through the concepts of love, language, and leadership which will build skills for everyday life situations and relationships. This program is a combination of ground skills as well as ridden. If you’ve heard of natural horsemanship, then you’re probably familiar with Pat Parelli. He created the seven games within his program to help owners establish effective communication with their horses. We have used these games to form basis of our Saddle Club Program. During our Saddle Club Program, participants will work through a modified version of the seven games to help develop a strong bond both in and out of the saddle by learning their horse’s language and the basics of these games. Each game is different, but maintains the same overall purpose. These games are designed to be played in order as every game builds on the one prior to it. This allows the games to make sense to your horse when they are presented in the correct order. The Saddle Club Program is ongoing and forever evolving as communication grows, the bond between horse and participant develops and confidence is built. To be honest, in this program, the sky really is the limit as after learning the basic techniques of the seven games in order, participants are encouraged to use some imagination and expand them with a variety of obstacles as well as putting them into practice mounted. |
The Friendly Game
This first game starts your relationship with your horse by building trust. It is excellent for those who are new to the horse world are feeling anxious and nervous and for the horse to develop trust with the participant also. Throughout the games, this one can be played in-between to keep the horse and the participant relaxed.
The Porcupine Game
The next game is about starting the communication process and getting the horse to yield to and from steady pressure. This includes when leading and backing a horse on the ground, but also later on, in the saddle with rein and leg cues.
The Driving Game
In this game, the horse will yield from pressure without you actually touching him.
The Yo-Yo Game
This game develops focus, energy and straightness. The horse will engage their hindquarters and become lighter, quicker, and straighter through the use of backward and forward movement.
The Circling Game
This game teaches and tests the horse’s respect and ability to listen to the participant without being reminded. The horse is sent out on a circle and then asked to return. He must continue around the circle until asked to stop.
The Sideways Game
This game teaches the horse to move sideways. The sideways game can develop skills that can be used for opening gates, mounting in the trails, lead changes, among other things.
The Squeeze Game
During this game the participant learns how to help their horse overcome its fears of tight and small spaces. Whether for the trailer, wash stall, or a narrow walkway, and feel more confident in these uncomfortable situations.
